✅ Understanding Your NSFAS Allowances for 2025
NSFAS does not just pay your tuition fees. You also get money for living expenses. Here is what you can receive in 2025:
Tuition Fees
NSFAS pays 100% of your tuition fees directly to your university or TVET college. You do not handle this money. NSFAS pays the institution.
Accommodation Allowance
If you stay away from home, NSFAS helps with accommodation costs:
- University students: Up to R45,000 per year for accredited accommodation
- TVET students: Up to R33,000 per year (R2,750 per month)
NSFAS usually pays accommodation directly to your landlord or residence. You must have a signed lease agreement.
Living Allowance (Monthly)
All NSFAS students get R1,650 per month for living expenses. This money is for food, toiletries, and personal care items. The allowance is paid monthly from February to November.
Transport Allowance
If you travel to campus from home, you can get transport money:
- University students: R787.50 per month (about R7,500 per year)
- TVET students: R612 per month if you live more than 40km from college
You cannot get both accommodation and transport allowances. You get one or the other.
Learning Material Allowance
NSFAS gives you R5,000 per year for textbooks and study materials. This money is usually paid at the start of the year. You can also use it to buy a laptop.
Disability Allowance
Students with disabilities get extra support. This includes money for assistive devices and personal care. You must complete the Disability Annexure Form.
