What is SnapScan?
SnapScan is a mobile app that lets you pay with your phone. You don’t need cash or cards. Just scan a special code and pay.
It was started in 2013. Standard Bank backs SnapScan. Over 60,000 South African businesses accept it.
The app is free. It works with any South African bank. You can also use international credit cards.
What You Can Do With SnapScan:
• Pay at shops and restaurants
• Buy things online
• Send money to friends
• Pay for parking
• Buy prepaid electricity and airtime
• Donate to charities
How Does SnapScan Work?
SnapScan uses something called a QR code. This is a square pattern of black and white dots.
Every shop has their own QR code. When you want to pay, you open the app. You scan their code with your phone camera.
The Payment Process:
Step 1: Shop shows you their QR code
Step 2: You open SnapScan app
Step 3: You tap “Scan” button
Step 4: Point your phone camera at the code
Step 5: Type in the amount to pay
Step 6: Enter your PIN or use your fingerprint
Step 7: Done! Shop gets paid instantly
The whole process takes less than 10 seconds. Your card details stay safe on your phone. The shop never sees them.
✅ What You Need to Use SnapScan
You need three things to use SnapScan:
1. A Smartphone
Works on iPhone or Android phones. Must have a camera. Windows phones are not supported.
2. A South African Cell Number
You must have a SA phone number. Vodacom, MTN, Cell C or Telkom all work.
3. A Valid Bank Card
You need a credit card or eCommerce-enabled debit card. Works with:
• Standard Bank, FNB, ABSA, Nedbank
• Capitec, African Bank, Discovery
• Any South African bank
Your card must be enabled for online purchases. If your card doesn’t work, contact your bank to enable eCommerce.
