What you can do:

  • Check how much money you have in your account
  • See all your transactions (what went in and out)
  • Transfer money to other people
  • Pay your bills
  • Buy prepaid electricity
  • Buy airtime and data
  • Download bank statements
  • Apply for loans or credit cards

It works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Even on Sundays and public holidays. You can bank whenever you need to.

✅ How to Register for FNB Online Banking

What you need before you start:

  • Your FNB bank card (debit or credit card)

You will see a “Register” button on the top right of the page. Click on it.

Step 3: Select “I have a card and PIN”

Choose this option for personal online banking registration.

Step 4: Fill in your details

You will need to enter:

  • Your card number (the 16-digit number on your card)
  • Your card PIN

  • Your cellphone number

Step 5: Create your username and password

Choose a username you will remember. Your password must have:

  • One special character (like ! or @)

Step 6: Accept the terms and conditions

Read the terms. Tick the box to show you agree. Click “Continue”.

Step 7: Confirm your registration

Check that all your details are correct. Click “Confirm” to finish.

⚠️ Important: You must activate your profile

After registration, you need to activate your online banking before you can send money or pay bills. You have two options:

  • Go to any FNB ATM – Use your card and PIN to activate your profile
  • Visit an FNB branch – Ask the staff to help you activate

You can view your balance without activating, but you cannot make payments until you activate.

Main Features You Can Use

Once you register, you can use these features on the FNB website (www.fnb.co.za):

1. Check Your Balance and Transactions

You can see how much money is in your account at any time. You can also see all the money that came in and went out. This is free.

2. Transfer Money

You can send money to:

  • FNB to FNB – Usually free or very cheap (R1 to R2)
  • FNB to other banks – Through normal EFT (R2 to R25 depending on your account)
  • Instant payments – Money arrives in seconds (fees apply)
  • eWallet – Send money to someone who does not have a bank account

3. Pay Bills

You can pay for electricity, water, rates, DStv, insurance, and many other services. Search for the company name and enter your account number.

4. Buy Prepaid Services

You can buy:

  • Prepaid electricity (get your token immediately)
  • Airtime for any network
  • Data bundles

5. Manage Your Cards

You can activate new cards, block lost or stolen cards, or order new cards. You can also view your card PIN if you forgot it.

6. Download Statements

Get your bank statements for free. You can choose any month you need. Download and save them as PDF files.

💡 Pro Tip: Save your beneficiaries (people you send money to regularly). This makes it faster to pay them next time. You only enter their details once.

📱 The FNB Mobile App

The FNB mobile app is called “FNB Banking App”. It has all the same features as the website, plus extra features for your phone.

Your daily limit may be lower depending on your account type and history with FNB.

🔒 How to Stay Safe When Banking Online

Online banking is safe if you follow these rules. Most fraud happens when people give away their passwords or PIN numbers.

The Golden Rules

1. Never Share Your Password or PIN

FNB will NEVER ask you for your password, PIN, or username. Not on the phone. Not by email. Not by SMS. Never give these to anyone.

2. Never Share Your OTP (One-Time PIN)

When you make a payment, FNB sends you an SMS with a code. This is called an OTP. Never give this code to anyone on the phone or internet. Type it only on the FNB website or app.

3. Check the Website Address

The real FNB website is: www.fnb.co.za. Make sure you see the padlock symbol next to the address. Scammers make fake websites that look similar.

4. Always Log Out

When you finish banking, click “Log Out”. Do not just close the browser. This is very important if you use a shared computer.

5. Use Strong Passwords

Make your password hard to guess:

  • Use at least 8 characters
  • Mix capital letters, small letters, numbers, and symbols
  • Do not use your name, birthday, or “password123”
  • Change your password every 3 to 6 months

6. Check Your Account Regularly

Look at your transactions at least once a week. If you see money going out that you did not send, call FNB immediately on 087 575 9404.

7. Be Careful on Public Wi-Fi

Try not to do banking when connected to public Wi-Fi at shopping centres, cafes, or taxis. Scammers can sometimes steal your information. Use your own mobile data instead.

8. Use the “Verify Owner” Feature

Before sending money to a new bank account, use FNB’s “Verify Owner” feature. This shows you the name of the person who owns that account. It helps you check you are sending to the right person.

🚨 Common Scams to Avoid in 2025

Scammers are getting smarter. They use new technology like AI to trick people. Here are the most common scams in South Africa in 2025.

Scam 1: Remote Access Software

How it works:

Someone calls you pretending to be from FNB. They say there is a problem with your account. They ask you to install software like TeamViewer, AnyDesk, or Chrome Remote Desktop so they can “fix” the problem. Once you install it, they can see everything on your phone or computer. They can see your passwords when you type them.

How to protect yourself:

  • FNB will NEVER ask you to install any software
  • If someone asks you to install software, hang up immediately
  • Call FNB yourself on 087 575 9404 to check if there is a real problem

Scam 2: Phishing Emails and SMS

How it works:

You get an email or SMS that looks like it is from FNB. It says your account will be closed, you won R1,000, or you need to update your details. It has a link. When you click the link, it takes you to a fake website that looks like FNB. If you enter your details, the scammer gets them.

How to protect yourself:

  • Never click links in emails or SMS messages
  • Type www.fnb.co.za yourself into your browser
  • FNB will never ask you to “verify” or “update” your details by email
  • Delete suspicious messages immediately

Scam 3: SIM Swap Fraud

How it works:

Scammers pretend to be you at a phone shop. They get a new SIM card with your number. Now they get all your OTP messages. They can reset your banking password and steal your money. You will notice when your phone suddenly has no signal.

How to protect yourself:

  • If your phone loses signal suddenly, call your network provider immediately
  • Also call FNB immediately on 087 575 9404
  • Set up a PIN with your network provider for SIM swaps
  • Do not share your ID number on social media

Scam 4: Online Shopping Fraud

How it works:

You see something for sale on Facebook, WhatsApp, or Instagram at a very good price. The seller asks you to pay into their bank account. After you pay, they disappear. You never get the item.

How to protect yourself:

  • Buy from well-known shops like Takealot, Makro, or Game
  • If buying from someone online, meet in person if possible
  • Use payment methods with buyer protection
  • If the price is too good to be true, it probably is a scam
  • Check reviews and ratings before buying

Scam 5: Investment or Ponzi Schemes

How it works:

Someone promises you can double your money in a few weeks or months. They say it is a “guaranteed investment” with no risk. You pay money in. At first, you might get some money back. But then the whole scheme collapses and you lose everything.

How to protect yourself:

  • All real investments have some risk – there is no “guaranteed” high return
  • Check if the company is registered with FSCA (Financial Sector Conduct Authority)
  • Call FSCA on 0800 110 443 to check if an investment is legal
  • Be very suspicious of schemes on WhatsApp or Telegram

Scam 6: Business Email Compromise (BEC)

How it works:

You get an email that looks like it is from your boss or a supplier. It asks you to make an urgent payment to a new bank account. The email address looks almost the same as the real one, but one letter is different. If you pay, the money goes to a scammer.

How to protect yourself:

  • Always call the person on a phone number you already have
  • Do not use the phone number in the email
  • Be suspicious of urgent payment requests
  • Check the email address very carefully
