What Is a Woolworths Credit Card?

A Woolworths credit card is like a regular credit card but with special benefits when you shop at Woolworths. It works as a loan that you can use anywhere Visa cards are accepted.

The card is issued by Absa Bank. This means Absa handles the banking side while Woolworths provides the shopping benefits.

How it works: You buy things now and pay later. You can pay the full amount each month or make smaller monthly payments. If you don’t pay in full, you pay interest on what you owe.

Woolworths Financial Services is a registered credit provider (NCRCP49) and must follow all South African credit laws.

The Two Types of Woolworths Credit Cards

Woolworths offers two credit cards. The main difference is how much money you need to earn each month.

💎 Black Credit Card – Premium Option

Who Can Apply?

This is the premium card for people who earn more. You need:

  • To be 18 years or older
  • A valid South African ID
  • To earn at least R41,666 per month (about R500,000 per year)
  • A very good credit record

Extra Benefits (on top of Gold benefits)

  • 3% back in vouchers – at Woolworths (better than Gold’s 2%)

⚠️ All Fees and Costs You Need to Know

Important: These fees were valid as of January 2024 but may change from January 2025 onwards. Always check with Woolworths for the latest fees.

Gold Card Fees (as of 2024)

What You Pay For Amount
Monthly service fee R57
Cash withdrawal at Absa ATM R27
Cash withdrawal at other ATMs R30
Cash withdrawal overseas R64
Balance enquiry at Absa ATM R2
Balance enquiry at other ATMs R4.50
Pay at Absa ATM R4.50 + R1.50 per R100
Cash deposit at Absa ATM R2.50 per R100

Interest on What You Owe

If you don’t pay the full amount each month, you pay interest. The interest rate depends on:

  • Your credit score
  • The current prime lending rate
  • Your payment history

Interest appears on your monthly statement. It changes if the prime rate changes.

💡 Money Saving Tip: Pay your full amount every month to avoid interest charges. If you can’t pay in full, pay at least the minimum amount to avoid extra fees.

🚨 Credit Card Scams: Protect Yourself

Warning: Scammers in South Africa are getting smarter. Credit card fraud is very common. Here’s how to protect yourself.

Common Credit Card Scams in South Africa

1. Fake Phone Calls from “The Bank”

How it works: Someone calls saying they’re from Woolworths, Absa, or the fraud department. They say there’s a problem with your card and ask for your card number, PIN, or CVV (the 3 numbers on the back).

The truth: Banks NEVER ask for your full card details, PIN, or CVV over the phone.

What to do: Hang up immediately. Call Woolworths or Absa on their official number (not the number the caller gave you).

2. SMS/Email Phishing

How it works: You get an SMS or email that looks like it’s from Woolworths or your bank. It has a link and says you must click it urgently or your account will be blocked.

The truth: These are fake messages. The links install malware on your phone or take you to fake websites that steal your details.

What to do: Don’t click links in messages. Go to the website yourself by typing it in.

3. Card Skimming at ATMs and Shops

How it works: Criminals attach devices to ATMs or payment machines that copy your card details. They also watch or record your PIN.

What to do:

  • Check if the ATM looks tampered with before using it
  • Cover your PIN when typing it
  • Use ATMs inside banks when possible
  • Don’t accept help from strangers at ATMs

4. Fake Delivery or Gift Scams

How it works: Someone comes to your house saying they have a delivery or gift. They ask you to swipe your card on their machine and enter your PIN. The machine copies all your card details.

What to do: Never give your card to strangers or use their payment machines. If you’re expecting a delivery, it should be paid for already or you should pay online.

5. SIM Swap Fraud

How it works: Criminals swap your SIM card to their phone so they receive your banking messages and OTPs (one-time passwords). They then access your accounts.

What to do: If your phone suddenly has no signal, call your network provider immediately. Also call your bank to block your cards.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Never share your PIN with anyone – not family, not the bank, not anyone
  • Never share the CVV – the 3 numbers on the back of your card
  • Don’t click links in SMS or emails about your card
  • Check your statements every month for transactions you didn’t make
  • Sign up for SMS alerts to get notified of all transactions
  • Keep your card with you – never give it to waiters or shop staff to take away
  • Destroy old cards – cut them up, especially the chip and magnetic strip
  • Use secure internet – not free WiFi for banking
⚠️ If You’re a Victim:
  1. Call Woolworths immediately to block your card
  2. Report to the police and get a case number
  3. Report to SABRIC: www.sabric.co.za
  4. Check your credit report for any unauthorized accounts

Your Rights as a Credit Card User

The National Credit Act (NCA) protects you. Here are your most important rights:

Right to Clear Information

  • All credit agreements must be in plain, easy-to-understand language
  • You must get a copy in a language you understand
  • All fees and costs must be explained clearly before you sign

Right to Know Why You’re Rejected

If Woolworths rejects your application, you can ask why. They must tell you the reason.

Right to Be Protected from Reckless Lending

Woolworths must check if you can afford the card before approving you. If they give you credit you can’t afford, that’s “reckless lending” and you can report them.

Right to Get Help with Debt

If you can’t pay your debts, you can apply for debt counselling. A debt counsellor will help you restructure your payments.

Right to Regular Statements

You must get a monthly statement showing:

  • What you owe
  • Payments you made
  • All charges and fees
  • When your next payment is due

Right to Check Your Credit Record

You can get one free credit report per year from each credit bureau. Check for mistakes and report them.

Right to Not Be Harassed

If you miss payments, the bank can contact you about payment. But they cannot:

  • Threaten you
  • Harass your family
  • Contact you at unreasonable times
  • Use abusive language

Other Options to Consider

A Woolworths credit card isn’t for everyone. Here are alternatives:

Woolworths Store Card

This is easier to get than a credit card. You can only use it at Woolworths stores, not at other shops. Lower income requirement.

Other Bank Credit Cards

Compare cards from:

Each has different fees and benefits. Shop around before deciding.

Save First, Buy Later

The cheapest option is to save money first and pay cash. You pay no interest this way.

Our Final Recommendations

✓ Get the Woolworths Gold card if: You shop at Woolworths often, you earn at least R3,000 per month, and you can pay your bills on time every month.

✓ Get the Woolworths Black card if: You earn at least R41,666 per month, shop at Woolworths very often, and want premium benefits like free coffee and better travel insurance.

✗ Don’t get any credit card if: You already struggle to pay your bills, you have a lot of debt, or you’re not sure you can pay on time. Credit cards are useful tools but dangerous if misused.

Most important tips:

  1. Always pay the full amount each month to avoid interest
  2. Never share your PIN or CVV with anyone
  3. Check your statement every month for fraud
  4. Only apply if you really need it and can afford it
  5. Read and understand everything before you sign
