In short: Selected Capitec branches can replace a lost, stolen or damaged Smart ID, or a green ID book. First-time ID applications are not done at Capitec yet. Capitec also says you pay from a Capitec account.
This is a South African Home Affairs service offered at some Capitec branches through the Department of Home Affairs Digital Partnership. It is not a promise that every Capitec branch can help you, or that your application will be accepted.
What Capitec actually offers
Capitec’s current Smart ID page says you can apply for a Smart ID replacement in selected branches. The visit is done in person because the branch captures your photo, fingerprints and signature.
The same page limits the service to:
- replacing a lost, stolen or damaged Smart ID card
- replacing a green ID book with a Smart ID card
First-time ID applications, including a first ID when you turn 16, are not available in Capitec branches yet. Home Affairs says those applications still have to be made at a Home Affairs office.
Home Affairs describes this bank route as different from the older eHomeAffairs process. On the Digital Partnership pages, you do not first log onto eHomeAffairs to book or pay, then pitch up at the bank. The application is handled at the participating branch.
Do you need a Capitec account?
Yes, according to Capitec. Its Smart ID page says you pay for the Smart ID using a Capitec bank account. If you do not have one, Capitec says it can help you open an account in branch. The application can continue once that account is active and has a positive balance.
Do not assume you can apply without a Capitec account.
What to bring
Capitec says you do not need to bring documents for the Smart ID replacement itself. Home Affairs’ Digital Partnership FAQ says the same for this bank route: no existing documents are needed, and someone else cannot apply on your behalf because biometrics have to be captured in person.
The one document Capitec does mention is for people opening an account during the same visit. In that case, bring your green ID book so the bank can verify your details.
If you are applying for a first ID, a name change, a late birth registration or another civic amendment, this is the wrong queue. Home Affairs says those services are not part of the first phase at bank branches.
What it costs
Capitec’s Smart ID page, dated 11 March 2026, states a total of R150:
- R140 Department of Home Affairs application fee
- R10 Capitec service fee
Home Affairs’ Digital Partnership FAQ also says the department charges R140 for a Smart ID card and that banks may charge a convenience fee. Check the current Capitec page or ask in branch before you go, because fees can change.
Home Affairs’ identity-document and tariff pages treat a first identity document as free. The identity-documents page also says a senior citizen aged 60 or older who is converting a green barcoded ID book to a Smart ID card pays no Home Affairs fee. Capitec’s current Smart ID page does not repeat that exemption. If you think an exemption applies, confirm it at the branch or with Home Affairs before you pay.
The Home Affairs tariff page lists a Temporary Identity Certificate at R70. The identity-documents page says that certificate is valid for two months. Capitec’s Smart ID page does not say this certificate is issued at the bank.
How the branch visit works
Home Affairs’ Digital Partnership FAQ says Capitec allows walk-ins at participating branches, with no appointment. Still confirm that with the current Capitec page or the branch before you travel, because hours and participating sites change.
Capitec says the application normally takes only a few minutes. Home Affairs says bank-branch processing is about 15 minutes and can differ from bank to bank. Treat both as a guide, not a guaranteed waiting time.
Home Affairs says you collect the card at the same bank branch where you applied. Capitec’s page does not give a collection period. Ask the branch how it will contact you.
Which Capitec branches can help
Only selected branches offer the service, and Capitec says it is adding more in phases. Do not travel on a remembered list from this site.
Use one of these official lists on the day you go:
- Capitec: Smart ID at our branches (capitecbank.co.za)
- Home Affairs bank-branch locator
- Home Affairs: participating bank branches
The Home Affairs locator was launched on 3 August 2026 so people can find the nearest participating bank branch as more sites join the Digital Partnership.
If Capitec is the wrong route
Use a Home Affairs office if you need a first-time ID, you are under 16, you need a name change or another amendment, or the bank cannot process your application. Home Affairs identity documents are issued to South African citizens and permanent-residence permit holders from the age of 16.
The older online route still exists separately through the eHomeAffairs portal linked from the Home Affairs site. That is a different process from walking into a participating Capitec branch.
Other banks also take part in the Digital Partnership. Home Affairs’ 3 August 2026 statement said South Africans could then use 372 participating bank branches. That is an all-bank figure, not a Capitec count, and it will keep moving. Use the official locator rather than an old comparison table.
Watch for unofficial helpers
Home Affairs warns that it does not render services outside its offices or via social media, that bookings are free, and that you should not pay bribes. Do not pay a person outside a bank or Home Affairs office to “speed up” a Smart ID. Do not send money, an OTP, a PIN or copies of your ID to someone who messages you about a blocked card or an urgent Home Affairs fee.
Pay only through the official Capitec account route described on Capitec’s page, or through the official Home Affairs channel if you are using a Home Affairs office.
For branch or account questions, use the contact details on Capitec’s current site. The Home Affairs Call Centre (HACC) is 0800 60 11 90.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for a first-time Smart ID at Capitec?
No. Capitec and Home Affairs both say first-time ID applications are not available at bank branches yet. Use a Home Affairs office.
Do I need to be a Capitec client?
Capitec says yes. You pay from a Capitec account. If you do not have one, the bank says it can open an account in branch first. The account needs to be active and have a positive balance before the Smart ID application continues.
Do I have to apply on eHomeAffairs first?
Not for this Capitec branch route. Home Affairs says Digital Partnership customers do not need to log onto eHomeAffairs to book or pay. The older online portal is a separate Home Affairs route.
What does it cost at Capitec?
Capitec’s 11 March 2026 page states R150 in total: R140 to Home Affairs and a R10 Capitec service fee. Confirm the current amount before you pay.
Do I need a birth certificate, proof of address or a police affidavit?
Not according to Capitec’s current Smart ID page or the Home Affairs Digital Partnership FAQ. Those pages say you do not need to bring documents for this bank replacement route. If you are opening a Capitec account at the same time, bring your green ID book.
Can someone else apply for me?
No. Home Affairs says the application must be completed in person so that biometrics can be captured.
Where do I collect the card?
Home Affairs says you collect it at the same bank branch where you applied. Ask that branch how it will tell you when to come back.
