Understanding Your Credit Score
| Score Range | Rating | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 767 to 999 | Excellent | Best rates, approved easily |
| 681 to 766 | Good | Approved for most credit |
| 614 to 680 | Fair | May get credit at higher rates |
| 583 to 613 | Below average | Limited options, high interest |
| Below 583 | Poor | Likely declined for most credit |
What Affects Your Score
- Payment history (35%): Paying on time is the biggest factor
- Amount owed (30%): How much of your available credit you are using
- Credit history length (15%): Longer history is better
- Credit mix (10%): Having different types (home loan, card, store card) helps
- New applications (10%): Too many applications in a short time hurts your score
How to Improve Your Score
- Pay all accounts on time, even if just the minimum
- Keep credit card balances below 30% of the limit
- Do not apply for multiple accounts at once
- Check your report for errors and dispute them
- Keep old accounts open even if you do not use them
- If you have no credit history, a small store card or Capitec credit card can help build one
How to Fix Errors on Your Credit Report
If you find incorrect information (a paid account showing as unpaid, or an account you do not recognise), you can dispute it directly with the credit bureau. They must investigate within 20 business days. File disputes through the bureau’s website or call their helpline.
