In short: Linking a South African bank account to PayPal or Wise is mostly a FICA / identity and bank-verification job, not a “secret bank setting”. For PayPal ZA withdrawals you normally complete FNB’s PayPal service (even if you bank elsewhere): verify PayPal, register a free FNB Online Banking profile if needed, submit FICA where asked, then link under Forex > PayPal. Wise verifies you with photo ID (and often proof of address) under its own help rules, then you add a ZAR account in your own name. Timelines and documents change. Confirm on the official sites. PayPal and Wise are different rails
- PayPal (South Africa): Receiving and withdrawing to a local bank usually runs through FNB’s PayPal partnership. You still need a verified PayPal account at paypal.com/za.
- Wise: Separate provider. You open / verify a Wise profile, then connect a personal bank account that matches your Wise name. Wise is not FNB PayPal.

PayPal ZA: verify, FICA, then link via FNB
- Create and verify PayPal: Sign up at paypal.com/za, confirm email, then complete PayPal’s “Get Verified” card check. PayPal charges a small card amount (later refunded) and embeds a four-digit code in the bank statement reference. Enter that code on PayPal.
- FNB Online Banking profile: FNB and PayPal both say you need an FNB Online Banking profile. If you do not bank with FNB, use FNB’s “Register for PayPal for non-FNB customers” path and submit the FICA documents they request (PayPal ZA help historically points FICA email traffic to paypalkyc@fnb.co.za; use the address shown on the live FNB / PayPal screens).
- Link: In FNB Online Banking or the FNB App, open Forex > PayPal > Link now (labels can vary slightly). Log in to PayPal when redirected to confirm you are the account holder. Non-FNB accounts can be added for withdrawal during linking.
- Verify a non-FNB account: FNB’s How-to PDF describes a small R0.01 deposit whose description starts with a VODS-style token. Enter the full verification code under “Verify non FNB Account”. Automated checks can take up to about 24 hours; FNB’s PDF lists a contact number if it stalls.
FNB’s PayPal page: withdrawals reflect instantly into an FNB account and can take up to 3 business days into a non-FNB account (PayPal’s own help article also mentions multi-day windows). Treat those as published estimates, not guarantees. Top-ups and withdrawals need Balance of Payments (BoP) reporting detail when FNB asks for it.
Wise: identity first, then bank details
Wise’s help centre: they verify identity because they are a financial institution. Typical documents include passport (photo page), national ID card (both sides), or photo driver’s licence (where accepted). They may also ask for proof of address (for example a recent utility bill or bank statement in your name). Upload clear, unexpired documents that match the name and date of birth on your Wise profile.
After verification prompts clear, add your South African bank account in Wise using the account name, account number and branch code your bank shows. The account should be personal and in the same name as Wise. In some cases Wise can treat a matching first bank transfer as part of verification; follow the in-app banner rather than blog shortcuts.
Common blockers (official themes)
- PayPal not card-verified yet, or FNB linking started before FICA cleared.
- Name mismatch between ID, bank account and PayPal / Wise profile.
- Blurry or expired ID documents (Wise lists these as common rejection reasons).
- Trying to withdraw PayPal from the app alone without FNB’s ZA link.
Smart ID / bank FICA updates are separate bank processes: Smart ID at FNB covers FNB’s ID role, not PayPal linking.
