How to Reverse Money on FNB App: Complete Guide for 2026

Sent money to the wrong person using your FNB app? It happens more often than you think. The good news is that FNB offers several ways to reverse or recover payments, depending on the type of transaction. This guide walks you through every option.

Can You Reverse an FNB Payment?

It depends on the transaction type. FNB allows reversals for some payments but not all. Here is a breakdown:

  • eWallet payments: Can be reversed if the recipient has not yet withdrawn the money
  • EFT payments to the wrong account: Cannot be automatically reversed, but you can request a recall
  • Debit orders: Can be reversed within 40 days
  • Card payments: Can be disputed through the FNB app

How to Reverse an eWallet Payment on FNB App

This is the easiest reversal because you have full control, as long as the money has not been withdrawn yet.

  1. Open the FNB app and log in
  2. Tap on Accounts at the bottom
  3. Select your transacting account
  4. Find the eWallet transaction in your history
  5. Tap on the transaction and select Cancel eWallet
  6. Confirm the cancellation

The money will be returned to your account immediately. If the option to cancel does not appear, the recipient has already withdrawn the funds and you will need to contact them directly.

How to Request an EFT Recall

If you sent an EFT to the wrong bank account, FNB cannot automatically reverse it. The money belongs to the recipient’s bank once it has been processed. However, you can request a recall:

  1. Call FNB on 087 575 9404 as soon as possible
  2. Provide the transaction details: date, amount, recipient account number
  3. FNB will send a recall request to the recipient’s bank
  4. The recipient’s bank will ask the account holder to agree to return the money

Important: The recipient is not legally obligated to return the money if it was a genuine mistake on your part. However, keeping money paid to you in error is technically theft under South African law. If the recipient refuses, you may need to open a case with the police or pursue the matter through the small claims court.

How to Reverse a Debit Order on FNB App

  1. Open the FNB app
  2. Go to My Bank then Manage Accounts
  3. Select Debit Orders
  4. Find the debit order you want to reverse
  5. Select Dispute and choose your reason
  6. The reversal will be processed within 2 business days

You can reverse debit orders up to 40 days after they were processed. For disputed debit orders older than 40 days, you will need to contact FNB directly.

How to Dispute a Card Payment

If you were charged incorrectly or did not authorise a card transaction:

  1. Open the FNB app
  2. Find the transaction in your account history
  3. Tap on the transaction
  4. Select Dispute Transaction
  5. Follow the prompts to submit your dispute

FNB will investigate and may issue a temporary credit while the dispute is being resolved. This can take up to 45 business days.

How Long Does an FNB Reversal Take?

The timeline depends on the type of reversal:

  • eWallet cancellation: Immediate
  • Debit order reversal: 1 to 2 business days
  • EFT recall: 5 to 10 business days (no guarantee)
  • Card dispute: Up to 45 business days

Tips to Avoid Needing a Reversal

  • Always double-check the account number before confirming a payment
  • Save frequent recipients as beneficiaries to avoid typing errors
  • Send a small test amount first when paying a new recipient
  • Use PayShap for instant payments where you can verify by phone number
  • Set up transaction notifications so you catch unauthorised payments quickly
