What’s in This Guide
What is Rain WiFi?
Rain is a South African company that provides internet without needing fibre cables. Instead, it uses mobile phone towers to send internet to your home or office.
Think of it like your phone’s internet, but much faster. Rain gives you a router (the box that makes WiFi) that connects to their towers. You don’t need to dig trenches or install cables.
Rain started in 2016 and was the first company in Africa to launch a 5G network in 2019. 5G is the newest and fastest type of mobile internet.
Rain WiFi Packages & Costs (November 2025)
Rain offers different packages depending on how fast you want your internet. All packages include unlimited data (you can use as much as you want).

⚠️ Important About Costs
Rain increased prices in June 2025. The old R795 package now costs R819. Always check the Rain website for the latest prices before signing up.
There are NO setup fees or router costs. You only pay the monthly amount.
⚠️ Where Rain WiFi Works (Coverage Areas)
This is very important: Rain does NOT work everywhere in South Africa. It mainly works in big cities.
Areas with Good Coverage:
- Gauteng: Johannesburg, Pretoria, Midrand, Sandton, Roodepoort
- Western Cape: Cape Town and surrounding areas
- KwaZulu-Natal: Durban and some suburbs
- Some parts of other major cities
Areas with Limited or No Coverage:
- Rural areas and farms
- Small towns
- Remote locations
- Some suburbs even in big cities
Visit www.rain.co.za and use their coverage checker tool. Enter your home address to see if Rain works in your area. Do NOT sign up without checking coverage first!
Rain uses over 3,000 towers across South Africa. They also lease towers from MTN and Vodacom to extend coverage. However, coverage is still limited compared to fibre internet.
What You Need to Sign Up for Rain WiFi
Like all South African telecommunications companies, Rain must follow FICA (Financial Intelligence Centre Act) rules. This means they need to verify your identity.
Required Documents:
- Valid ID or Passport: For South African citizens, a green barcoded ID book or smart ID card. For foreigners, a valid passport.
- Proof of Address: Must be less than 3 months old. Can be a municipal bill (water, electricity, rates), bank statement, or lease agreement.
- Bank Account: For debit order payments (automatic monthly payments from your bank account).
- Working Email Address: Rain communicates mainly by email.
- Cellphone Number: To receive important messages.
Other Requirements:
- You must be 18 years or older
- You must live in a Rain coverage area
- You need electricity at your home (the router needs power)
- Payment by debit order (automatic bank deduction)
✅ How to Get Rain WiFi (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Check Coverage
Go to www.rain.co.za. Find the coverage checker tool. Enter your home address. The website will tell you if Rain works at your address and which speeds are available (4G or 5G).
Step 2: Choose Your Package
Look at the different packages and prices. Think about how much internet you use. For watching Netflix and YouTube, choose 5G Standard or Premium. For basic browsing and WhatsApp, 4G or 5G Basic is enough.
Step 3: Order Online
Click “Order Now” on the Rain website. Fill in your personal details (name, ID number, address, phone number, email). Upload photos of your ID and proof of address. Enter your bank account details for debit order.
Step 4: Wait for Delivery
Rain will verify your documents (this can take 1-3 days). Once approved, they will deliver your router by courier. Delivery is free and usually takes 2-5 working days.
Step 5: Set Up Your Router
When the router arrives, plug it into electricity. Wait for the lights to turn green (this can take 5-10 minutes). Connect your phone or laptop to the WiFi network (the network name and password are on a sticker on the router).
Step 6: Start Using Internet
That’s it! You can now use unlimited internet. Your first payment will be debited from your bank account within a few days.
⚠️ Important Notes:
- Rain has NO physical shops or walk-in centres. Everything is done online.
- Keep your router in a place with good signal (near a window is usually best).
- The router needs electricity. During loadshedding, buy a power bank or inverter to keep it running.
- You can cancel anytime – there are no cancellation fees.
Good Points & Bad Points About Rain WiFi
✅ Good Points:
- No Contracts: You can cancel anytime without penalties.
- Truly Unlimited: No data caps or fair usage policies (unlike many competitors).
- Easy Setup: No installation needed, just plug and play.
- Cheaper Than Fibre: Often costs less than fibre internet packages.
- Fast Installation: Get internet in days, not weeks or months like fibre.
- Free Router: No upfront costs for equipment.
- No Credit Check: Even people with bad credit can get it.
- Portable: You can take the router with you if you move (if your new area has coverage).
❌ Bad Points:
- Limited Coverage: Only works in some areas, mainly big cities.
- No Phone Support: You cannot call them. Support is only online through email or chat.
- Inconsistent Speeds: Many users complain about slow or unreliable speeds.
- Connection Drops: Internet can cut out, especially during peak times (evenings and weekends).
- Slower Upload Speeds: Good for downloading but slower for uploading files.
- Weather Dependent: Bad weather can affect the signal.
- Loadshedding Issues: Router stops working during power cuts (unless you have backup power).
- Poor Customer Service: Many complaints about slow or unhelpful support.
- Not Good for Gaming: Can have high latency (lag) which affects online gaming.
⚠️ Common Problems People Have With Rain WiFi
Based on customer reviews from 2025, here are the most common complaints:
1. Slow or No Internet During Peak Times
Problem: Many users report that internet becomes very slow or stops working between 6pm and 11pm (when many people are online).
Why: Too many people using the same tower at the same time causes network congestion.
What You Can Do: Try using internet during off-peak times (early morning or afternoon). If the problem continues, consider getting fibre instead.
2. Connection Keeps Dropping
Problem: Internet works for a while, then suddenly disconnects.
What You Can Do: Move your router closer to a window. Restart the router by unplugging it for 30 seconds. Check if there are network issues in your area on the Rain status page.
3. No Phone Support
Problem: Rain does not have a customer service phone line. You can only get help through their website chatbot or email.
What You Can Do: Use the “Ask Rain” chatbot on their website (available 24/7). Send emails to support@rain.co.za (but expect slow responses). Contact them on social media (Facebook or Twitter) for faster help.
4. Difficulty Cancelling Service
Problem: Some customers report being charged even after cancelling their service.
What You Can Do: Cancel online through your Rain account. Get written confirmation of cancellation. Keep proof of cancellation and proof that you returned the router. If they keep charging you, contact your bank to reverse the debit order.
5. Router Not Activating
Problem: Router lights stay red or orange, internet doesn’t work.
What You Can Do: Check that your area has good Rain coverage. Wait up to 24 hours for activation (especially for new accounts). Contact Rain support if it still doesn’t work after 24 hours.
Rain has a TrustIndex score of only 7.2 out of 10 on HelloPeter (as of 2025). This means many customers are not happy with the service. Read reviews before signing up.
🚨 Scams to Avoid (Very Important!)
Scammers are using Rain’s name to steal money and information. Here are common scams to watch out for:
Scam 1: Fake “Rain” SMS or Email Messages
How It Works: You get an SMS or email claiming to be from Rain. It says your account will be closed or your internet will stop unless you click a link and enter your banking details.
Red Flags:
- Urgent language like “Act now or lose your service!”
- Links that don’t go to rain.co.za
- Asking for passwords, PINs, or card details
- Poor spelling and grammar
What to Do: Delete the message. Do NOT click any links. Log into your Rain account directly through www.rain.co.za to check if there are real issues. Rain will never ask for your password or banking details via SMS or email.
Scam 2: Fake WiFi Networks
How It Works: Scammers create fake WiFi networks called “Rain Free WiFi” or similar names in public places. When you connect, they can see everything you do online and steal your passwords.
Red Flags:
- WiFi network with “Rain” in the name in a public place
- No password needed to connect
- Asking you to download something to use the WiFi
What to Do: Only use your own Rain home WiFi network. Never connect to public WiFi networks claiming to be “Rain”. If you must use public WiFi, don’t do banking or enter passwords.
Scam 3: Fake Router Upgrade Calls
How It Works: Someone phones you claiming to be from Rain. They say you need to “upgrade” your router and ask you to install software on your phone or give them remote access to your devices.
Red Flags:
- Unsolicited phone call from “Rain”
- Asking you to install TeamViewer, AnyDesk, or other remote access apps
- Claiming your router will stop working unless you act now
- Asking for one-time PINs (OTPs) from your phone
What to Do: Remember: Rain does NOT have phone support! Any call claiming to be from Rain is a scam. Hang up immediately. Do NOT install any apps or software. Do NOT give out OTPs or passwords.
Scam 4: “Free Rain Router” Offers
How It Works: You see Facebook posts or WhatsApp messages offering “free Rain routers” if you pay a small delivery fee (like R150) to a private bank account.
Red Flags:
- Offers on social media from personal accounts (not Rain’s official account)
- Asking for payment to private bank accounts
- Promises that sound too good to be true
What to Do: Only order Rain WiFi through the official website www.rain.co.za. Never pay into private bank accounts. Real Rain routers are free when you sign up for a package – you never pay extra for the router.
- Rain will NEVER phone you
- Rain will NEVER ask for your password or PIN
- Rain will NEVER ask you to install remote access software
- Only order from www.rain.co.za
- Never pay into personal bank accounts
Where to Report Scams:
- SABRIC (South African Banking Risk Centre): Report fraud at www.sabric.co.za
- Your Bank: Contact them immediately if you gave out banking details
- South African Police Service: Open a case at your nearest police station
- Real Rain: Report fake messages to support@rain.co.za
