SASSA SRD Grant 2026: How to Apply, Check Your Status and Fix a Declined Application

In short: Apply and check COVID-19 SRD only on srd.sassa.gov.za. SASSA’s call centre is 0800 60 10 11. Use a WhatsApp number only if it matches SASSA’s current payment poster (the July 2026 poster printed 082 601 0111). Do not use a number from a forwarded message. This page does not quote a rand amount; check the portal. Approved is not the same as paid: why approved but no payment. Contacts: official SASSA SRD contacts.

What Is the SASSA SRD Grant and Who Qualifies in 2026?

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is a monthly cash payment from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). It is designed to help unemployed people who have no other income. This page does not quote a rand amount — check the amount on srd.sassa.gov.za or in SASSA’s current material.

For how long the COVID-19 SRD grant runs and what it pays, check SASSA’s current material or the portal at srd.sassa.gov.za. We do not publish an end-date or an amount that we cannot source from SASSA.

To qualify, you must meet ALL of the following:

  1. You are a South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, asylum seeker with a valid Section 22 permit, or a holder of a Special Angolan, Lesotho, or Zimbabwe Exemption Permit.
  2. You are between 18 and 60 years old.
  3. You must meet SASSA’s means test. The current income threshold is set by SASSA — see sassa.gov.za/social-grants/srd.
  4. You are not receiving any other SASSA grant (such as an Old Age, Disability, or Foster Care grant). Note: Receiving the Child Support Grant does NOT disqualify you.
  5. You are not receiving UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) payments or NSFAS student funding.
  6. You are not living in a government-funded institution such as a prison or rehabilitation centre.

SASSA checks your eligibility every single month. Being approved one month does not guarantee approval the next. Your bank account activity, UIF records, SARS data, and Home Affairs details are all checked regularly. Make sure your personal details are always up to date.

How to Apply for the SRD Grant Online, via WhatsApp and USSD

You only need to apply once. Do not submit multiple applications — it could cause problems. There are three ways to apply.

Before you start, have these ready:

  • Your 13-digit South African ID number (or valid permit/passport if you are a refugee or asylum seeker)
  • A cellphone number registered in your own name
  • Your banking details (if you have a bank account)
  • Your residential address

Option 1: Apply Online

The official website is srd.sassa.gov.za. Only use this address. Be very careful of fake websites.

  1. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za on your phone or computer.
  2. Click “Apply Online”.
  3. Enter your cellphone number and click “Send SMS”.
  4. You will receive a One-Time PIN (OTP). Enter it and click “Verify Pin”.
  5. Read the declaration and agree to the terms.
  6. Fill in your personal details: ID number, full name, email address, residential address, employment status, and citizenship.
  7. Add your banking details or choose a Cash Send option if you do not have a bank account.
  8. Submit the form. You will receive a confirmation SMS.

Option 2: Apply via WhatsApp

This is a popular option if you have WhatsApp but limited data. WhatsApp and Facebook are zero-rated on many networks in South Africa.

  1. Save the number printed on SASSA’s current payment poster — the July 2026 poster printed 082 601 0111. Confirm it on the current SASSA poster/site before you use it, and never use a number from a forwarded message.
  2. Open WhatsApp and send the word “SASSA” to that number.
  3. Follow the prompts. You will receive a reference code, an OTP, and a link to complete your application in your browser.
  4. Note: The link expires after 2 hours, so complete it quickly.
  5. Open the link, enter your OTP, fill in the remaining fields, and submit.

Option 3: If you cannot get online

We do not publish USSD codes for SRD unless they appear on SASSA’s own pages. Start on the portal at srd.sassa.gov.za, and call 0800 60 10 11 if you need to speak to a person.

Once you have submitted, SASSA will begin verifying your identity, income, and other details. This can take a few weeks. You will get an SMS with the outcome.

How to Check Your SRD Application Status

The SRD grant is reviewed every month. Your approval is not permanent. You need to check your status each month to know if you are approved and when you will be paid.

There are several ways to check your status:

Method 1: Check Online (Fastest)

  1. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za.
  2. Enter your 13-digit ID number and the cellphone number you used when you applied.
  3. Click Submit. Your status and payment date (if approved) will show on screen.

⚠️ Safety tip: Always check that the web address says srd.sassa.gov.za before typing in your details. Avoid links shared in WhatsApp groups or on social media — these may be scam sites.

Method 2: Check via WhatsApp

  1. Save the self-service number from SASSA’s current payment poster — the July 2026 poster printed 082 601 0111. Confirm it on the current SASSA poster/site first.
  2. Send your full name and ID number via WhatsApp.
  3. You will receive your status back in a message.
  4. Use your registered phone number for accurate results.

Method 3: If you cannot get online

We do not list USSD codes for SRD status unless SASSA publishes them on its own pages. Check your status on srd.sassa.gov.za, or call 0800 60 10 11 if you need a person to help you.

Method 4: Call the SASSA Helpline

Call 0800 60 10 11. This is a toll-free number. Have your 13-digit ID number ready when you call.

What your status means:

  • Application Complete – SASSA received your application and is starting to verify it.
  • Pending – Your application is still being checked. Wait and check again in a few days.
  • Approved – You qualify for this month. A payment date will be shown. Check your date carefully.
  • Declined – Your application was turned down for this month. A reason will usually be shown. You have the right to appeal.

Why Your SRD Application Gets Declined and What It Means

A declined status does not mean you can never get the grant again. SASSA checks eligibility every month, and you can appeal. Here are the most common reasons for a decline:

  • Income detected above the means test: SASSA checks your bank account every month. If money comes in that pushes you above SASSA’s means test — even a once-off payment from a family member — your grant may be declined for that month.
  • Identity verification failed: Your details do not match the records at the Department of Home Affairs. This can happen if you recently updated your ID or changed your surname.
  • Already receiving another SASSA grant: If you receive an Old Age, Disability, or Foster Care grant, you cannot also receive the SRD grant. Remember: the Child Support Grant is the exception — receiving it does NOT disqualify you.
  • UIF registered: SASSA’s records show you are receiving UIF payments. The SRD grant and UIF cannot be received at the same time.
  • NSFAS beneficiary: If you are receiving student funding from NSFAS, you are excluded from the SRD grant.
  • Duplicate application: More than one application is linked to your ID number.
  • Receiving other state support: If you are living in a government institution or receiving other state assistance, your application may be declined.

When your status shows “Declined,” check the reason shown on the portal carefully. Write down the exact wording. You will need it when you appeal.

How to Appeal a Declined SRD Grant Decision

If your grant was declined and you believe it was wrong, you have the right to appeal. Appeals are handled by an independent body called the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) — not by SASSA itself. This gives you a fair second chance.

Deadlines: If the portal shows that you can appeal a declined month, appeal as soon as possible and use only the official portal or SASSA channels. We do not publish an appeal deadline here — the timeframe that applies to your month is the one shown on srd.sassa.gov.za or confirmed by SASSA on 0800 60 10 11. If you were declined for more than one month, submit a separate appeal for each declined month.

The appeal process is completely free. Never pay anyone to appeal on your behalf. If someone contacts you asking for money to “fix your grant,” it is a scam — report it immediately.

How to appeal step by step:

  1. Go to the official appeals portal: srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals
  2. Enter your 13-digit ID number and the cellphone number you used when you applied.
  3. Click “Send PIN” — you will get a One-Time PIN via SMS.
  4. Enter the PIN to verify your identity.
  5. Select the month(s) for which your grant was declined.
  6. Choose the correct appeal reason from the menu. Match it to the exact decline reason shown on your status.
  7. Upload supporting documents if required. For example:
    • If declined for “income detected”: submit recent bank statements or a signed affidavit showing you have no income.
    • If declined for a UIF or NSFAS issue that is incorrect: submit confirmation that those payments have ended.
    • If declined for identity mismatch: submit a corrected ID or Home Affairs document.
  8. Submit your appeal and save your reference number or take a screenshot. You may need this later.

What happens after you appeal:

Your appeal is reviewed and you will be notified of the outcome. We do not publish a turnaround time here, because it is not something we can confirm as current official fact — check the status of your appeal on the official portal. If your appeal is approved, your grant is reinstated and any missed payments may be backdated. If it is declined, the reasons are given, and you may reapply the following month if your circumstances change.

To check your appeal status, go back to srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals and log in with your ID and phone number. If there is no update, follow up through the official channels only — the SASSA call centre on 0800 60 10 11 (also written 0800 601 011) or the contact details published on sassa.gov.za. Do not rely on phone numbers or email addresses forwarded to you; see our official SASSA SRD contacts page.

SRD Grant Payment Dates and How to Choose Your Payment Method

When will you get paid?

Unlike the Old Age or Disability grants, the SRD grant does not have one fixed payment date for everyone. SASSA assigns each approved beneficiary their own payment date. Payments are generally processed after the permanent social grants are paid. We do not publish a payment calendar here: your date for an approved month is shown on the portal, and anything else should be confirmed with SASSA.

Your exact payment date only appears on your status once you are approved for that month. Check srd.sassa.gov.za regularly, and confirm anything you are unsure of with SASSA on 0800 60 10 11. A payment can take some time to reflect after it is processed; if it does not arrive, see approved but no payment.

How to receive your payment

When you apply, you choose how you want to receive your money. Your options are:

  • Bank account (recommended): SASSA pays directly into your account. This is the fastest and safest method. The account must be registered in your own name. You can use Capitec, Standard Bank, Postbank, FNB, or any other South African bank.
  • Cash Send / Mobile Wallet: If you do not have a bank account, your payment is sent to your registered cellphone number. You receive an SMS with a PIN and can withdraw the money at an ATM or participating retailer. Your cellphone number must be registered in your own name (RICA’d).
  • Post Office: Collect your grant in cash at your nearest South African Post Office. Wait for an SMS from SASSA confirming your payment is ready before you go.
  • Retail stores: You can also collect at certain stores such as Pick n Pay, Boxer, Shoprite, or Checkers using a PIN or voucher sent to your phone via SMS. Always bring your ID.

To update your banking details or payment method, visit srd.sassa.gov.za and go to the banking details section. Enter your ID number and follow the SMS link. Make sure any changes are made before the verification deadline each month to avoid delays.

Protect yourself from scams: SASSA will never ask you to pay a fee to receive your grant or appeal a decision. Never share your OTP, bank PIN, or personal details with anyone who contacts you first. Always verify information through the official SASSA channels listed above.
