SA Bank USSD Codes 2026: Capitec, Absa, FNB, SB, Nedbank

In short: USSD cellphone banking lets you dial a short code on any phone (no app data required) to open a bank menu for balances, transfers, prepaid and similar services your bank enables. Official main codes confirmed from bank pages: Capitec *120*3279#, Absa *120*2272#, FNB *120*321# (airtime top-up theme *130*321#), Standard Bank *120*2345# (top-up theme *130*2345#), Nedbank *120*001#. Menus, fees and registration rules change. Confirm on each bank’s site before you rely on a code. Not financial advice.

What USSD banking is for

You dial the code, follow numbered prompts, and authenticate with the PIN or password your bank issued for cellphone banking. It is useful when you have no smartphone data, a weak connection, or need a quick balance, prepaid purchase or payment. Network USSD or call charges may apply even when the bank does not add a separate “subscription” fee. Register your cellphone number with the bank first through the channel that bank publishes (app, ATM, branch or USSD registration flow).

Official codes (confirm live)

  • Capitec: *120*3279# (named on Capitec FAQ / fee-sheet mobile banking footnotes for Send Cash and related remote banking).
  • Absa: *120*2272# (Absa Cellphone Banking product and help guides for register, login, balances and PIN reset).
  • FNB: *120*321# for Cellphone Banking; *130*321# for airtime/data top-up when you do not have airtime (FNB Cellphone Banking page).
  • Standard Bank: *120*2345# to bank; *130*2345# to top up without airtime or data (Standard Bank Cellphone Banking page).

Typical menu themes (not a full tree)

Bank menus differ, but official cellphone banking pages commonly advertise balance views, transfers between your accounts, payments, prepaid airtime or electricity, and sometimes debit-order tools. Do not memorise third-party “press 1 then 3” trees. Dial the official code and follow the labels your bank shows that day. Capitec clients who need Send Cash without the app should still confirm the live USSD path on Capitec’s FAQ after dialling *120*3279#.

Other banks: confirm on the bank site

Codes for TymeBank, Discovery Bank, African Bank, Bank Zero, Postbank and similar providers are easy to copy wrongly from third-party lists. This hub does not list unsourced dial strings. Open the bank’s official cellphone banking or help page and save the code that bank publishes today.

How to use it safely

  1. Add the official code to your contacts from the bank’s website, not from a forwarded SMS.
  2. Cover the keypad when entering your cellphone banking PIN.
  3. Never share that PIN, an OTP or a full card number with a caller who claims to be the bank.
  4. If your phone suddenly loses signal, treat SIM-swap risk seriously and contact your network and bank through numbers you look up yourself.
  5. If the menu says the number is not registered, complete registration through the bank’s official path before retrying.

What to confirm live

  • Whether your profile is registered for cellphone banking on that handset number.
  • Daily limits and transaction fees on the bank’s current pricing guide.
  • Whether a *130* top-up short code exists for your bank (sourced above for FNB and Standard Bank only).
  • Customer-care numbers printed on your card or the bank website if the session fails.
