If you need to cancel your FNB funeral cover, you can do it through the app, online banking, or by phone. This guide explains the process, what to expect, and things to consider before you cancel.
How to Cancel FNB Funeral Cover on the App
- Open the FNB app and log in
- Go to My Products or Insurance
- Find your funeral cover policy
- Select Manage Policy
- Choose Cancel Policy
- Confirm the cancellation
Your cover will end at the end of the current month. You will not be refunded for the current month’s premium.
Cancel by Phone
Call FNB on 087 736 7772 (insurance line) and request cancellation. Have your ID number and policy details ready. The agent will process the cancellation and send you confirmation via SMS or email.
Cancel via Online Banking
- Log in to FNB Online Banking
- Navigate to Insurance
- Select your funeral policy
- Click Cancel and follow the prompts
Cooling-Off Period
Under South African law (Policyholder Protection Rules), you have a 31-day cooling-off period from when you first took out the policy. During this period, you can cancel for a full refund of any premiums paid, no questions asked.
After the cooling-off period, you can still cancel at any time, but you will not receive a refund of premiums already paid. Funeral cover does not have a cash or surrender value.
What Happens When You Cancel?
- Your cover ends at the end of the current premium month
- You and all covered family members lose funeral cover immediately after that date
- There is no payout or cash value on cancellation
- If you take out a new funeral policy later, the waiting period starts again (usually 6 months for natural death)
Before You Cancel: Things to Consider
- Waiting periods: A new policy will have a 6-month waiting period for natural death claims. If someone falls ill during this gap, there would be no cover
- Get replacement cover first: Never cancel funeral cover without having a new policy in place
- Compare costs: FNB funeral cover is competitively priced. Check if you are actually getting a better deal elsewhere
- Family impact: If your policy covers dependants, make sure they know and have alternative cover
